Review: Meridion 'Caverns'

Chilean death metal maestros, Meridion, deliver their sophmore offering, Caverns, a nocturnal journey through dense and ominous realms. This release signifies a significant progression for Meridion, building on the success of their debut LP, Rise from the South. The new album strikes a balance between atmospheric elements and fast-paced sections, presenting a fresh yet authentic take on death metal.

The band exhibits masterful craftsmanship on this heavy, ritualistic, and occult-infused album. Caverns isn't just another record; it's a death metal rollercoaster, spiraling through cool and eerie vibes. Picture heavy guitars, weird synths, and a dash of occult magic – all packed into one musical adventure.

The opening track, "Empty Altars," immediately immerses listeners in dissonant, Gorguts-esque landscapes. Turbulent riffs merge into darkness, accompanied by intriguing keyboard and organ flourishes. "Darkness Unleashed" continues the journey with zapping synths, eerie vocals, and a chant-like presence, creating a deeply dark atmosphere.

"Calafate" nods to Black Sabbath's "Ironman" with its doomy intro guitar riffs, before launching into atmospheric synths. "Consecration" stands out as one of the album's highlights, showcasing the band's ability to seamlessly blend clear death growls with a lo-fi vocal approach.

"The Curse of Maquehua" skillfully mixes death metal intensity with a sense of ritualism. Above all, "Behold Man from Monteverde" steals the spotlight. It starts with low-frequency synths and tribal drumming, evolving into a hypnotic, almost EDM-like state, before erupting with ripping guitars and growls. The instrumental track captivates with snake rattles and desert guitar strings.

Closing the album is "Hidden Chant," emphasizing the crucial role of chanting in the sonic landscape Meridion has crafted.

The album's sonic richness and atmospheric depth are a testament to the band's bold exploration of death metal and its diverse facets. Caverns stands out in the genre, merging Morbid Angel and Portal influences, promising a unique experience for fans of Nile, Immolation, and Cenotafio.
